Salon POS system

Process client payments, sell retail products, manage your cash drawer, and track stylist tips using an integrated salon point of sale till system.

A busy Saturday afternoon is the real test of your reception desk. You have three clients waiting at the till, and they all want something different. One needs to pay for a half-head highlight, another wants to buy a gift voucher, and the third is looking for a digital receipt. Behind them, two stylists are trying to check the diary to book their next appointments. If your till isn't fast enough, the reception area gets crowded and your afternoon's running late.

When checkout's quick, your team can focus on looking after clients, not on fighting with the screen. A reliable till keeps the front desk calm, so your clients leave happy and your stylists stay on schedule.

Checkout

Luminate includes a quick POS checkout to keep your reception desk moving. You tap the appointment in the calendar, review the service, and complete the payment in seconds. The till runs on any device, so you can check a client out from a tablet on the salon floor or from a computer at the main desk.

You can send digital receipts straight to the client's inbox, which keeps your desk tidy and saves money on paper. If a client prefers a printed receipt, you can print one, but most people prefer the digital version. Sending receipts electronically also gives clients a permanent record of their appointments and retail purchases, which helps them remember their home-care routine.

Unlimited terminals

Software providers frequently charge extra for every till you add to your salon. They call it a multi-device licence or a per-terminal fee, and it quickly becomes a quiet drain on your cash flow. You want a computer at the front desk, a tablet in the colour area, and a phone in your pocket. Under a per-terminal charging model, adding those extra screens gets expensive.

A salon using three tills pays a penalty. If your provider charges £20 extra per month for each additional screen, you'll pay £40 extra every month just to access your system. That comes to £480 in extra fees every year.

Luminate doesn't charge per user or per terminal. You pay £69 per month, and you can run the software on as many devices as you need. Your reception computer, your staff tablets, and your mobile phone all run at the same time. There are no surprise bills when you add a stylist or set up an extra tablet.

Cash drawer and end of day

Counting the till at the end of a long shift is usually the last thing you want to do. If the numbers don't balance, you spend half an hour checking receipts and card machine logs to find the mistake. Cash drawer management needs to be simple so you can go home on time.

Luminate tracks every transaction, cash float, and till payout. When you open the till in the morning, you enter the starting float. Throughout the day, the system logs every cash payment, change given, and withdrawal. At the end of the shift, you count the cash in the drawer, enter the total, and the software shows you any discrepancies immediately. You don't have to spend your evening working out the numbers on scrap paper.

Gift vouchers and retail

Gift vouchers are brilliant for cash flow, but they're difficult to track if you're using paper books or spreadsheets. You need to know which vouchers are outstanding, when they expire, and the remaining balance on each voucher. Luminate handles gift vouchers digitally. You can sell a voucher at the till, assign a unique code, and track the voucher balance. When a client redeems a voucher, the system updates the remaining balance automatically, which means you don't run the risk of a voucher being used twice.

Your retail shelves represent cash tied up in products. If you don't know what's sitting on your shelves, you're either running out of popular shampoos or over-ordering products that don't sell. Luminate includes product inventory to track stock. Every time you sell a product at checkout, the system updates stock levels. You can run a stock check, see which products are running low, and see which items have been sitting on shelves for months. This keeps cash in your bank account, which is better than holding unsold stock on shelves.

Reporting

To run a successful salon, you need to know your numbers. Luminate generates revenue reports that show you exactly what your salon is earning, broken down by services and retail. The reports also track how your team is doing. Staff performance reporting tracks which stylists are booked out, which ones are selling retail, and how many of their clients are rebooking.

If you pay commission, commission automation does the work for you. The system calculates the commission owed to each stylist based on their service and retail sales. You don't have to spend your Sunday evening checking every receipt to work out individual staff commissions.

What it costs

Luminate costs £69 per month, and every feature is included. There are no contracts, no minimum terms, and no exit fees. You can cancel at any time.

The monthly fee includes unlimited staff accounts, unlimited terminals, and 300 SMS credits. Email and WhatsApp messaging are included as standard. If you take online payments, such as booking deposits, there is a card processing fee of 2% plus 20p. A £20 online payment costs 60p, and a £50 online payment costs £1.20. There are no setup fees and no monthly gateway fees. Your monthly fee also includes a free onboarding call, video tutorials, and access to the online docs, which you can actually read.

The right till keeps your salon running smoothly from the first client on Tuesday to the end-of-day count on Saturday. If your current software makes checkout slow or charges you extra for every screen you use, look for a system that keeps things simple.
